Biosketch Dr. Olafur S. Palsson is a licensed clinical psychologist. He is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also Associate Editor of the journals Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback and American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis. He was previously Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School and served as Director of the EVMS Behavioral Medicine Clinic from 1996-2000. Dr. Palsson is originally from Iceland. After completing his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology, he completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in behavioral medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, under the direction of Dr. William Whitehead. Dr. Palsson has conducted numerous research studies on the mind-body connection, including studies on hypnosis, biofeedback, psychological factors which influence health, and psychosocial influences on autonomic nervous system functioning, brainwave activity, hormones, and the immune system. Dr. Palsson has also worked for many years with scientists at NASA on innovative technologies to enhance human health and well-being through technologies that interface human psychology and physiology with computers. Dr. Palsson's work in behavioral medicine has been featured on television networks and in newspapers nationwide in the U.S., as well as in interviews by Newsweek, Prevention Magazine, American Health magazine, Natural Health Magazine, Health magazine, and Digestive Health and Nutrition. His work with NASA on health-enhancing technologies has been featured in articles in many science and technology oriented publications, including the magazines Science, Discover, and Wired, as well on BBC television and online news and the major U.S. television networks.
